Welcome to the first review on our blog where we’ll be reviewing Canal St Coffee at Campbell Wharf! This spot has become a go-to for us, especially on Sunday afternoons when we meet up with friends for a dog walk before settling in for coffee (and chats), delicious food, and cakes. This time, however, we approached our visit with a reviewer’s perspective, bringing along a list of criteria to provide you with the most helpful insights possible. And as it turned out, we discovered a few surprises ourselves!
Canal St Coffee is a beloved Milton Keynes coffee shop, supported by fantastic local partners like Bogota Coffee Co, Doe & Fawn Coffee Roasters, and T.Sweetmap. Known for its coffee, cakes, and inviting co-working space, we’re excited to share our thoughts on each of these aspects to help you decide if it’s the perfect spot for your next coffee outing.

Food at Canal St Coffee Campbell Wharf
Canal St Coffee at Campbell Wharf offers a limited food menu, but what they do offer is quite tasty. Unfortunately, popular items can sell out early in the day, even though the coffee shop remains open for several more hours. Food preparation times can be lengthy (15 minutes + during their busy hours), with dishes arriving at the table at different times (10+ minutes apart).
However, the bakery is a real highlight and already worth the trip if you’re looking for a reason to visit. The milk tea cake is a must-try, and their seasonal themed cakes are also impressive.
Drinks at Canal St Coffee Campbell Wharf
Canal St Coffee Campbell Wharf offers an array of beverages, from smoothies to the classic hot drinks like coffee, hot chocolate, and tea.
For some context, both of us are coffee enthusiasts. We each have high-end barista-style coffee machines at home and enjoy trying beans from different regions. We test different brewing settings, roasting times, and whatever else we can adjust to find the best recipe for each unique coffee bean. Heck we even have an excel sheet to track all the recipes we’ve tried so we know good coffee and bad coffee; while taste is a personal preference, over brewing coffee and over roasting the milk is something else.
Before we launched our review blog, we genuinely enjoyed the coffee Canal St Coffee Campbell Wharf. But with a critical eye on this visit, we have to say – their coffee didn’t quite live up to the local hype (or maybe just our taste bud!). I ordered a medium latte, expecting a lovely cup of brew I would normally enjoy. However, after just a few sips, I left almost the whole cup behind before we took off and found myself questioning how I hadn’t noticed this until today.
To be precise, the coffee tasted over-brewed, and the milk tasted burnt, giving it a rather bitter flavour.
That said, one thing we’d happily recommend is paying them a visit to purchase their partner coffee beans from Doe & Fawn Coffee Roasters available for sale in the shop, ideal if you have a coffee machine at home.
Atmosphere at Canal St Coffee Campbell Wharf
Weekdays are generally quieter, though some days can still be busy, they don’t quite reach the level of weekend crowds. On weekends, however, it’s a different story: the place is packed with queues spilling out the door. The atmosphere is just busy, with hardly any room to move around, making it feel like everyone is shoulder-to-shoulder. While we think the layout could support accessibility, it’s less likely to be practical when it’s this packed; anyone on foot would end up rubbing shoulders with others just to get through.
Co-working at Canal St Coffee Campbell Wharf
Canal St Coffee at Campbell Wharf is a welcoming spot for remote workers, there are some limitations with its internet connection. While it’s generally reliable for browsing and accessing text-based content, it may not be ideal for tasks that demand higher bandwidth, like video calls or large file downloads. Given that remote work often involves virtual meetings, research, and collaborative projects, the connection here might not fully support those needs. We’d recommend considering other spots if your work relies heavily on a stable, high-speed internet connection for a seamless co-working experience.
Thoughts to summarise an experience at Canal St Coffee Campbell Wharf
Canal St Coffee at Campbell Wharf has a lot to love, especially if you’re in the mood for some delicious cakes. While our coffee experience didn’t quite match the hype (that even we fell for), we think the chance to grab some great beans from their partner roaster is a real win for those who enjoy brewing at home.
Just keep in mind that if you’re hoping to get some work done, the WiFi might not be up to par for heavy lifting.
And if you stop by after a dog walk, there’s no dog waste bin nearby so you might end up double bagging it in your car to throw it away once you’re near a bin once you drive away.
